Grand Conseiller Pinot Noir Reserve 2020
Recently I came across this Grand Conseiller Pinot Noir Reserve 2020, a 100% Pinot Noir for just over 5 euro. It’s not often that you can find Pinot Noir under 10 euro, so I decided to take it home.
The wine is made by Bouchard Aîne & Fils, from Baune in Burgundy, though this isn’t a 100% Burgundy as it’s released under the Vin de France appellation. This gives winemakers greater freedom, as it gives them the opportunity to blend different varietals from different regions. For the wine we will taste today we know that it’s still 100% Pinot Noir, but some of the grapes come from the South of France while also using Pinot Noir from its native soil.
The wine is matured for 6 months in stainless steel vats, while a proportion is casked into oak barrels to soften the tannins.

My Notes:
This Pinot Noir starts with red fruit from cherry and cranberry, there is also licorice, some chocolate, and a soft oak influence. There is toast, smoke, some mushroom, raisin, cheese and balsamic. Humid forest floor, grilled meat, plum and blackberry are there as well. I’m hinting between 3,5 and 4,0 grapes, of course, you could argue to go for 4,0 Grapes in this case as it’s not often that you find a 100% Pinot Noir for this price, but I’ve decided to make it 3,5 Grapes here as I think that’s, in the end, the best fitting rating.
