Baron de Ley Varietales Maturana 2017

Baron de Ley Varietales Maturana 2017

This week it’s time to introduce another new grape here in our GrapeDummies reviews, today we taste a wine made exclusively with the Maturana grape, the Baron de Ley Varietales Maturana 2017.

Baron de Ley is a winery with vineyards in the DOC Rioja. They make the well-known Reserva and Gran Reserva styles, but today we take a look at a wine in their Varietales range. These are their single-variety wines, and one of them is Maturana.

An old grape from Rioja that almost disappeared, this actually was the first wine made with this grape. I’m interested to find out how it tastes.

Facts:

Wine: Baron de Ley Varietales Maturana 2017

My notes:

Very interesting on the nose. Full and bold with raisin, balsamic, leather, blackberry and some oak. There is vanilla, tobacco, violet, almonds with a touch of prunes. This is a nice and different Rioja without any Tempranillo. Great wine with lamb and dark red meats, highly recommended if you can find a bottle.
