Besserat de Bellefon Cuvée des Moines Sec Champagne

How can you better start the New Year than with Champagne? And that while Champagne isn’t really my style. But for some occasions like New Year’s Eve, you have to make it special with your closest friends or family. So we did!

I lately received this Champagne as a gift from one of my contacts in the business circuit. On the outside a good-looking bottle, that I wanted to keep for celebrating the New Year. Also hoping that this one would blow off my expectations about Champagne.

In 1843 Besserat de Bellefon was founded by the Marne river around Aÿ, France. The founder was Edmond Besserat. Over the years, he became known for his skill in producing exceptional cuvées. These cuvées were supplied to the biggest hotels, restaurants and wine merchants. That was the moment he decided to make his own champagne under the Besserat brand name. Later in the 1920s, the jewel of the house, la Cuvée des Moines, was born. The Besserat brand later evolved and became an international standard. During the years Besserat was owned by several groups. At this moment the owner is the Lanson-BCC Group. Besserat now owns 25 hectares of vineyards.

So we’re going to look if this Champagne was better fitted for me. But also this Champagne couldn’t match my expectations. As said Champagne is not really my style. And that is why I can’t give an objective view of this wine. If I only look to what my taste and eyes told me. A good-looking bottle, nice looking in the glass. Very much citrus and notes of brioche. Further notes of lemon and apple. If I have to give it a Grape Dummies Score of 2.5 grapes. Champagne wouldn’t be the style I will soon review again (Perhaps Ryan can do that ;-)). Of course, I hope a lot of you like Champagne and drink it with joy!
