Campo Viejo Rioja Reserva 2014
In the supermarket, I was looking for a wine for the weekend and the Campo Viejo Rioja Tempranillo 2018 was on the discount, so I put that one in my basket. Later on, in the store I saw the Reserva 2014 vintage, so I added that one to my basket instead. I was familiar with the Tempranillo but not with the Reserva, so I definitely wanted to try the Reserva.
The history of Bodegas Campo Viejo goes back till the time of the Roman Empire, but the first vintage from the vineyard was in 1959. Since 2001 a new wind has blown through the vineyard and the Campo Viejo invested in enormous cultivation and modernization, especially in vinification methods. The Rioja wines of Campo Viejo are famous because they are composed of Tempranillo grapes from three well-known, characteristic areas/climates within the Rioja, namely: The full, powerful grapes from Alavesa, the lighter grapes from Alta and the spicy, ripe grapes from Balta.

My Notes:
When I think of a Rioja wine, it gives me a tasting profile from a bold and full wine. This Rioja was completely different for me and it didn’t disappoint me at all, on the contrary, it was a little surprise because the taste was, in my opinion, smooth and light with notes of oak, tobacco, plum and lots of red fruit. Mid-length finish and not so tannic. A reasonable red wine to enjoy!
