Can Sumoi Xarel·lo 2020

Can Sumoi Xarel·lo 2020

As the temperatures keep on rising near the end of June it’s time to share some great white wines. Today we have just that. Xarel·lo is of course mostly known as one of the three main grapes in Cava. But on its own, it’s also a great refreshing white summer wine.

Can Sumoi is a project from Francesc Escala and Pepe Raventós from Raventós i Blanc. In this estate, in Baix Penedès they focus on the recovering of the native varieties of the region. This Xarel·lo is handpicked and then vinified without intervention and without aging, with yeast from the vineyard.

My Notes:

Soft and refreshing Xarello! Minerals with notes of stone, saline, and some pear. A touch of almonds, butter, straw, anise. Lemon, yeast and some apple as well. It’s great to see when producers focus on their local varieties, and this was a great example of that. I’ll keep my eyes open for more releases from Can Sumoi.
