Clos del Portal Negre de Negres 2017
Clos del Portal Negre de Negres is the wine I chose to review this week. The winery is situated in the Priorat region in the North East of Spain. I tasted this wine for lunch in a restaurant in Falset after visiting a neighbouring vineyard. It’s a blend of Garnatxa, Carignan and Syrah. From vines that are 20 to 65 years old, that are planted at an altitude of 450-500m. Matured for 15 months in foudres and French oak barrels.
This will be our fourth wine review from the Priorat region, and I’m realising that I start to appreciate Priorat wines more and more. I’m curious to find out what this wine brings us. In general, the Grenache and Carignan grapes work amazingly together in Priorat, and to see it mixed with Syrah can only mean more interesting notes. Let’s take a look at all the facts and notes for this wine.

My Notes:
As I mentioned before this Priorat is a blend of Garnatxa, Carinyena and Syrah. Delicious, it is full of chocolate, plum, blueberry with a touch of nutmeg and balsamic. The obvious Priorat leather notes are accompanied by some smoke and tobacco. Further, there is an influence of the oak as well as licorice, pepper, violet and jasmine. I even get a hint of tomato leaf. This really is an amazing Priorat and the first 5 Grapes wine on the GrapeDummies website! Make sure to pick up a bottle if you come across it!
