Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria 2018

Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria 2018

This coming weekend the Vuelta finishes again after three weeks of cycling through the country, so what better than to look for a new Spanish wine to review. The Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria is a 100% Garnacha from the Campo de Borja region in Aragon in the north of Spain.

It’s the first time that we try here on our GrapeDummies website a wine from the Campo de Borja region, this is perhaps not the most well-known region in Spain, but it’s one to look for as in this region you can find some great Garnachas!

The grapes for this wine are harvested from very old vineyards, planted in the traditional system on the slopes of the Iberian Mountain range. The harvest generally takes place in the first week of October and after harvest the wine ages on the lees for 4 months in French oak barrels. So knowing all this I can’t wait to taste this single variety Garnacha.

My notes:

Great Garnacha from the Campo de Borja region. Plum, prune, leather, pepper and licorice. A touch of oak, fig and raisin are there as well. Some more blueberry and cherry, there is a great intensity in the wine and it has a lingering long aftertaste. This wine matches very well with beef!
