Feuerheerd’s Douro Doc Reserva 2019
Time to add a wine from Portugal to our database. We’re reviewing a lot of wines from Italy, Spain and France, but Portugal is also a very nice wine country.
This wine comes from the family Van Zeller. This family is one of the most famous families in the Port area and owns several wine houses, including Feuerheerd’s. The family is one of the renowned families that have been very important to Portugal. They have been making port wines in their beloved Portugal since the seventeenth century. In the old vineyard on the Douro, the local grape varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo) are planted in the best places. The sun can easily lose its heat to the vines so that the harvest ripens evenly. The wind that blows over the Douro River gives the harvest cooling and room to develop completely. The Van Zeller family pays a lot of attention to the vineyard. All grapes are harvested by hand and then this red wine matures for no less than twelve months in oak wooden (port) barrels.

My notes:
You can immediately taste that this wine is aged in Port barrels. The wine is nice and bold. Smooth and more to the sweet side because of the port taste. The wine got a lot of notes from dark fruit, like blackberry and plum. Also cherry and a little bit jammy. Further oaky notes like vanilla and tobacco. For me, with the port taste the wine is just a little bit too sweet, but just for one glass very nice. A nice 3.5 Grape Dummies Score!
