G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge

G.H. Mumm Cordon Rouge

With the Tour de France almost finishing its second week, we thought it would be time to focus on another wine from France. And not just a regular still wine, no the “champion” of sparkling wines, Champagne!

The Cordon Rouge is the signature cuvee of Maison Mumm. The focus is on the Pinot Noir grapes which come from the Motagne de Reims and Aube. Further they also use Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, Sézannais, Vitryat and Aube; and Pinot Meunier from the Marne and Ardre valleys and the Montagne de Reims.

According to Mumm the Cordon Rouge champagne is aged for a minimum of 20 months in the cellars, but as this is a no vintage release we can expect it to be a blend of multiple vintages. After almost 1,5 years of writing reviews here for the GrapeDummies, both Dennis as I have never reviewed a Champagne, so I’m pretty excited to taste this one.

My notes:

My first champagne, and to be honest I expected a little bit more from it. There were green apples, honey, lemon, grapefruit, and brioche. Some vanilla strawberry, pear, and cream as well. Absolutely not bad, but for half of the price I’ve tasted way better Cava’s. That doesn’t mean of course I won’t try any more champagne’s, absolutely not, perhaps this release was just not a perfect fit for my palate. But whenever I can I will try to broaden my experience and taste more Champagne.
