Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2003

Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2003

The Giro d’Italia has started again. One of the three Grand Tours of cycling, that all three happen to travel through big wine counties. This Giro will ride through many wine regions, so I thought it would be fitting to share with you one of my favorite Italian wines, this Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella from 2003.

On a recent trip to the Priorat region, we had lunch in a restaurant with a huge wine selection, of course, a lot of local wines, but I also found this Italian classic, so I decided to purchase the bottle in the restaurant and bring it home. Masi uses the traditional grapes from the Valpolicella Classica area, Corvina, Molinara, and Rondinella, which after harvest are laid out on bamboo racks to concentrate their aromas during winter with the appassimento technique.

This is a Costasera, which means that the grapes grow on the slopes that face the sunset, there where the day is longer, the vines overlook Lake Garda and they benefit from the reflection of its light and a milder climate. Now back to the Giro, on May 21st the stage finishes in Verona, and on the 27th of May the stage follows a part of Lake Garda through the Valpolicella region. We hope you join us in enjoying the Giro and great wines!

My notes:

This was a wine we saved for a special day, and it was well worth it, an Amarone from 2003. Loads of plum, prunes, raisins, blueberry, and dried figs. A beautiful mix of dark chocolate, jam, cherry, licorice, and almonds. Further, I also got some leather, oak, cocoa, and blackberry. A true delicious well-matured Amarone.

Grape Dummies Score:

4,5 Grapes
