Matsu El Picaro 2019

This week we visit a DO in Spain of which we haven’t tasted any wine from before, we will taste the Matsu El Picaro 2019, from the Toro DO. Toro is often named alongside the Ribera del Duero region, as they both can be found in the Duero river valley.
El Picaro is the youngest release from the winery, the Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) grapes come from a selection of 90-year old vineyards. The fermentation is carried out in French oak barrels, while the wine isn’t filtered nor clarified before bottling. In general, I really like the Ribera del Duero wines, so I’m curious how this young Toro will taste!

My notes:
Chocolate, plum, cherry, blueberry, pepper, mocha and some blackberry. A hint of leather, prune and cream. As the wine is fermented in French oak barrels which result in vanilla. Further a touch of minerality with licorice. Lovely young and fresh wine from older vines. Even though these grapes were harvested less than a year ago, it has a full and rich taste. This wine can easily mature a bit longer!

What says Vivino about this wine:
The exact location of the vineyards of Matsu is unknown to us. But the Toro DO is based around the town of Toro.
