Montemajor Flétris 2019

Montemajor Flétris 2019

This week it’s time for a Primitivo from Puglia. I’ll taste the Montemajor Flétris 2019, a double-oaked appassimento wine. Fletris literally means grapes ripened in wood, and that has everything to do with the way this wine is created.

The grapes are harvested when almost reaching the maximum wilting point. After harvest, they are directly subject to cold pre-maceration, and then straight put into aged barriques. This means the casks have already held wine before. Later the wine is then transferred into fresh barriques which helps it to take more character and aromas from the wood.

In 2020 I tasted the Montemajor Quattronotti, a Negroamaro which I really enjoyed, so let’s see how this Primitivo is!

My notes:

An appassimento wine from the Primitivo grape. Delicious dark fruit notes with blackberry, plum, raisins, chocolate, licorice and a touch of leather. Cherry, prune, vanilla, oak and some cinnamon. Some lighter notes of strawberry and raspberry are there too. Fully enjoyed this Puglia Red!
