Pago Calzadilla Classic 2013

Pago Calzadilla Classic 2013

To finish 2021 off we review the Pago Calzadilla Classic 2013, a Vino de Pago from Spain. In Spain the DOP classifications are divided into 3 main sub-classifications, DO and DOQ/DOCa are the two most common and well-known. But there is also a third category, Vino de Pago (DO Pago). These are single-vineyard wines, at this moment there are only 18 Pagos, and Pago Calzadilla is one of them.

The vineyard is located in the Río Mayor Valley at an altitude between 900 and 1000 meters near the town of Huete in Cuenca. The valley has a microclimate with frequent fogs and winds, which protects the vineyard from spring frosts, while it also brings freshness to summer nights. In total there is 22 hectares of vineyards.

The Pago Calzadilla Classic is a red wine blend from Tempranillo (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%), Garnacha (10%) and Syrah (10%), the wine is matured for 12 months in French oak barrels of 300 and 500 liters.

This is my first ever Vino de Pago, so I’m curious what to expect, let’s give it a try.

My Notes:

This was a very interesting find. A bold wine from Pago Calzadilla. Deep flavours of marmalade, cassis, blackberry and balsamic. I also get some notes of vanilla and oak, it’s clear that this wine has matured in some French oak. Further, there is pepper, mineral notes and fig. Prune, licorice and tobacco are also there!
