Protos Crianza 2015

Protos Crianza 2015

Protos Crianza 2015 is the wine we will discover this week, a red wine from the Ribera del Duero region. As a Crianza, this 100% Tempranillo release needs to be aged before release. The wine is matured for 14 months in French and American oak barrels. 33% in new French oak, 34% in one-year-old French and American barrels and the final 33% in two-year-old French and American oak. Afterwards, it matures a further 14 months in bottle before the release.

I picked this wine up together in a package with the Emilio Moro 2017, which we reviewed some months ago. In general, I really enjoy oak-matured Tempranillo so I’m curious to find out if this wine fits my palate.

My notes:

Yes, this is exactly what I was hoping for! Deep ruby coloured Ribera del Duero. Lovely blackberries, blueberries, plum and cherry. There is some oak and vanilla from the maturation in French and American oak. Further roasted coffee, almonds and pepper. The wine is mouth-coating with some fig, minerals and milk chocolate, even a hint of licorice. Make sure to let this great wine open up!
