Varvaglione Papale Linea Oro Primitivo di Manduria 2015

My dad showed up with this Primitivo the other day. My parents went over for dinner, so I said to my dad: “I’m taking care of the food, you take care of the wine. We’re going to eat Roastbeef with Haricot Verts from the barbecue. So good luck!” And then he came over with this wine. If this was a perfect match? You’re going to read in the tasting journal.

The winemaker of this Papale is Cosimo Varvaglione. He is also the owner of the winery, named Vigne e Vini srl. He discovered that Puglia has got a special climate near the Mediterranean Sea and the fertile soil where grapes as Negroamaro, Primitivo and Verdeca perfect grow.

The Papale wine is a wine that, as the name says it, a wine with papal origins. The grapes for this wine come from a vineyard nearby Manduria, which is owned by the family Orsini. The members of this family are the descendants of the only Italian pope in the history, Pope Benedetto XIII who was elected in 1724.

My Notes:

What a powerful and full-bodied wine this Papale wine is. I really can understand that this is loved in the Vatican. A wine that characters the Primitivo grapes, ripe and full of taste. Opening the bottle you immediately smell the fantastic scents. The wine has got beautiful notes of blackberries, cherries and plum. Further notes of vanilla, chocolate and tobacco. The wine is a little bit jammy and toffee, with a little pepper. Very refined, elegant and perfectly balanced. It tasted very well with our dinner. Definitely one to put on the wishlist. Get one and enjoy!
