Yvon Mau Comtesse Thibier Merlot 2019

Yvon Mau Comtesse Thibier Merlot 2019

Our local liquor store promoted this wine in a shop folder as a smooth and nice drinking wine, so I asked my wife to take a bottle on the way back home, so we could try this wine at home. Later on, you’ll read what my thoughts are about this wine.

First something about the winemaker. The house of Yvon Mau has been around since 1897. The initiator was Aristide Mau, but it’s his son Yvon, who went on his vélocipède along the winegrowers in the Bordeaux region to select wines to sell. He had a nose for picking wines and made some good selections to expand his portfolio. The house of Yvon Mau became a well-known wine merchant. We take a huge step forward in time. In the 90s, wine merchant Jean-François Mau wanted to give special attention to women who love wine. Until the 80s, it was still said in some circles in France that an honorable woman doesn’t drink wine. Mau wanted to break these old-fashioned ideas. This project, which he co-founded with his wife Catherine, took them beyond their beloved Bordeaux region as they searched for wines that were smooth, fruity and elegant. They launched the special cuvées of Comtesse Thibier, Catherine’s maiden name: a Chardonnay and a Merlot.

My Notes:

The first impression seems to look very well, but unfortunately, the wine didn’t match my type of style. Because I’m a man and this wine is made to give special attention to women that love wine, I asked my wife for her opinion. She is also a wine lover, by the way. My wife’s findings unfortunately matched mine. It’s a light and smooth wine. Notes of red cherries, some plum and a little bit prune, slight touch of vanilla. Not a distinct taste and very flat. Almost no length on the finish. We don’t come further than a 2.5 Grape Dummies Score.
